Pilot burners give the main burner a stable, reliable flame to light from, and they can carry their own igniter and flame detection. Flares in refineries, petrochemical plants and gas facilities need instant, dependable ignition on demand, often from a control panel hundreds of metres away. They also need automatic re-ignition if the flame goes out.
